The Keys to Success

The Keys…

“Nothing on this earth is standing still. It’s either growing or it’s dying. No matter if it’s a tree or a human being.” — Lou Holtz

There are many kinds of people in this world, but for this article, we will generalize them into two categories. The first category includes those who are content with their life and circumstances. The second category comprises those who are unsatisfied and want more from themselves and life.

At some point, everyone falls into the unsatisfied category and works towards creating more for themselves. However, what separates those who remain unsatisfied from those who become content is their persistence. The effort and energy required to be successful can be unbearable. The sacrifices, sleepless nights, and the knowledge that needs to be consumed all seem impossible at the start. Many give up and accept their reality. They then see others achieve what they believed to be impossible and chalk it up to luck or fate. This way of thinking will always keep you trapped in your current situation. To break free and go beyond, you must learn to overcome your own mind.

So… what are the keys? They’re simple.

  3. Read Books and Continually Consume Knowledge
  4. Network
  5. Have Patience

Set Clear Achievable Goals

“I don’t care how much power, brilliance or energy you have, if you don’t harness it and focus it on a specific target, and hold it there, you’re never going to accomplish as much as your ability warrants.” — Zig Ziglar

Goals are a powerful tool to guide us toward the path we want in life. Many are aware of the benefits of goal setting but fail to understand the importance of being realistic with their goals. To blindly say, “I want to be a millionaire next year,” has an infinitesimally small chance of occurring unless you are primed to do something that could easily generate that wealth.

So, what does an achievable goal look like? It can be as simple as losing 10 pounds by the end of the year. This is a fully attainable goal that can be completed within a year. Remember, every goal doesn’t need to be a big goal. Prioritize things you care about and that will have a positive impact on your life, not ideals you think you should follow because others do.

Another thing to remember is the big difference between a goal and a vision. A goal is a specific action or result you are trying to accomplish, like saving $10k in 6 months. A vision, on the other hand, is a lifestyle or state of being you want for your life. To be financially free isn’t a number you hit; it’s both a mindset and a way to live your life, making it something that never truly ends.

Think through what goals you have for yourself and whether it is a goal or a vision.

Maintain a Positive Mindset

“The mind is everything. What you think you become.” — Buddha

Positive does not mean naive. Learn to be realistic with your expectations and the work required to achieve your goals. This helps you prepare for the challenges ahead. Being prepared and confident allows you to stay positive because you know each challenge is just another step in the process.

Many people give up because they are naive about what can happen when trying to grow. Small bumps in the road can derail their progress, while those who are prepared manage to either change lanes or proceed with confidence, knowing their progress can’t be stopped.

A positive mind is a resilient mind don’t let life or others break that!

Read Books & Continually Consume Knowledge

“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.” — B.B. King

Knowledge is a powerful tool and a catalyst for growth. To get the most from this tool does not mean you need to become an expert. Many successful people aren’t experts in their fields, but they are knowledgeable and wise. This sharpness of mind comes from experience and knowledge. The purpose of continued learning is to accumulate knowledge and experience that can help you now and in the future.

Fundamentally, the purpose of continued education is to stimulate your mind and open you to new ideas. Over time, we become set in our ways, and our minds can dull from repetitive tasks. Reading, taking courses, attending seminars, and finding a mentor are activities that keep your mind active and adaptable, paving the way for growth.

A dull mind will always yield dull results.

Network

“Instead of better glasses, your network gives you better eyes.” — Ronald Burt

If you’re reading this article, it means you have a LinkedIn account, giving you access to a powerful networking platform. However, simply having a profile doesn’t create a network. Just congratulating someone on a work anniversary doesn’t create a network. Posting only when you need a new job doesn’t create a network. Many people use this platform, as well as other sites and events, in the same way and expect results.

The true way to network is to continually give. Help those you can help, and if you can’t, refer them to someone who can. This approach allows people to see you as an asset and makes them more likely to return the favor. However, your aim should be genuine interaction, not making others “owe you one.” As Harvey Mackay said, “My Golden Rule of Networking is simple: Don’t keep score.”

Give for the sake of giving, and when you need help, that kindness will be repaid.

Have Patience

“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.” — Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Having patience in today’s society is challenging. We live in a world of instant gratification. If you’re hungry, you can have food delivered to your door in minutes. In sports, if you’re unhappy, you can request a trade. The volatility of crypto has created numerous overnight millionaires. Given these examples, it’s easy to see why delayed gratification seems unappealing. We used to believe that being responsible with your money would lead to an enjoyable retirement in your 50’s & 60’s. However, seeing young people on social media driving Lamborghinis and riding on yachts makes achieving that kind of wealth now very appealing.

Remember, fast money goes just as quickly as it comes. Don’t let what you see change your plan and strategy. Slow and steady wins the race, and having patience along with other key factors ensures that you will finish the race. You will be able to weather the storms that are bound to come and continue to persevere because you know your time will come.

“Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.” — Earl Nightingale

So, how do you overcome your own mind? It begins with setting clear, achievable goals and maintaining a positive mindset. Surround yourself with people who inspire and motivate you. Read books, attend seminars, and continuously seek knowledge that will help you grow. Most importantly, be patient with yourself. Success does not come overnight; it is a journey that requires dedication and hard work.

Remember, the key to moving from the unsatisfied category to the true content category is to never give up. Keep pushing forward, even when the going gets tough. Embrace the challenges, learn from your mistakes, and celebrate your victories, no matter how small they may seem. In the end, your persistence will pay off, and you will find yourself living the life you once thought was impossible.
